We absolutely LOVE this recipe and after trying our Electric Pressure Cooker Vegetable Soup, I KNEW I wanted to try Unstuffed Cabbage Soup in my Instant Pot next.

I have tried this in both my 6 quart Instant Pot and my 6 quart Farberware Electric Pressure Cooker. Both times with great success.

This cabbage lover loves how quickly the electric pressure cooker can make the cabbage tender.

Chris this soup sounds really good and i want to make it in my instant pot but ran into one problem. The only pearl barley around here isn’t what I would call a quick cooking barley as it says 45 minutes on your stove so do you think it would be done just throwing it in my instant pot with everything else or should I cook it seperate.I was hoping to keep it all in one pot but now I am not sure about the pearl barley. What should I do? Thanks for any help! Cynthia

FAQs

Is it better to slow cook or pressure cook soup? ›

Yes, if you are using meat and dried beans and/or lentils as the pressure cooker cuts down on cooking time dramatically! For other soup vegetables not so much unless you're in a hurry, when it would speed things up. Otherwise the slow cooker is a better option for long slow cooking.

Can you use a pressure cooker instead of a crockpot? ›

Update the cooking time: Instant Pots are designed to cook much faster than slow cookers, so you'll need to adjust the cooking time accordingly. As a rule of thumb, you can cook most slow cooker recipes in an Instant Pot on high pressure for one quarter of the slow cooker time.

How long is too long for slow cooker soup? ›

Recipes with meat like chili and pork shoulder are best when cooked for six hours minimum or up to ten hours. Vegetarian recipes are best cooked for around four hours, but can do a minimum of two hours or maximum of six hours (after which the vegetables start to get unpleasantly mushy).

What setting should my pressure cooker be for soup? ›

Make sure the pressure regulator is set to the “Sealing” position. Program the cooker to pressure cook 25 minutes at high pressure. (Instant Pot users can also select the "Soup" program and follow the same cooking time. For stovetop pressure cookers, cook at high pressure for 22 minutes.)

What is the difference between an electric pressure cooker and a Crockpot? ›

Slow cookers and pressure cookers are large countertop appliances that can be used in place of pots, pans, and even ovens. The distinction between them is in their names; slow cookers cook food slowly, while pressure cookers cook food fast using pressure.

How long does a pressure cooker take compared to a slow cooker? ›

Generally, if your slow cooker meat, soup, or stew recipe calls for 8 hours on the low setting or about 4 hours on the high setting, it should be fully cooked in about 25 to 30 minutes in the Instant Pot. For chicken or turkey, use the 15-minute poultry button. While volume doesn't matter, density does.

Does soup taste better in a pressure cooker? ›

The pressure cooker requires less liquid for cooking, so you end up with a concentrated soup that is great for freezing and diluting when reheated. I've made pea and ham soup in a casserole for years: the flavour is just as good in the pressure cooker, and it's at least two hours faster.

Does soup taste better in slow cooker? ›

Slow cookers can transform a few simple ingredients into the most delicious soups by simmering them for hours. This low and slow cooking allows the flavors to mingle, creating rich, flavorful soups perfect for chilly days, nights, or any day you want to enjoy a bowl full of goodness.

Are pressure cookers good for soups? ›

Pressure cookers are ideal for making soups and risottos and speeding up slow-cook dishes such as casseroles.

Why is slow cooking better than pressure cooking? ›

Slow cookers can take less fashionable cuts of meat and really make something special. They offer the advantage of adding extra depth to your cooking. Adding red wine, herbs & spices to the slow cooker can take your dish to another level. Slow cookers are energy efficient.
