Welcome spring!
God created seasons for people like me. I love changing the decor in my home to reflect the seasonal changes. I would get bored looking at the same things all year long.
This year I kept my mantles uncluttered going with simple spring fireplace mantle decor in both the living room and the keeping room. I’ve got lots of pics and decorating ideas to share with you, so let’s get started.
Clean Before You Start Decorating
Hold on just a minute! Before you start putting up your decor and drawing attention to your fireplace, take a few minutes to give it a good cleaning. Completely remove everything off of the mantle. Make quick work of it by using the right cleaning tools for the job. Use a handheld vacuum to suck up all the loose dust, then wipe it down with a wood cleaner and microfiber cloth. And if your fireplace is looking a little neglected, here’s how to clean your fireplace bricks.
Now you’re ready to decorate!
Simple Spring Fireplace Mantle Decor
Living Room
Our living room fireplace has a large television mounted above it. My husband’s speakers also take up a lot of space (they are a compromise…larger than I wanted and smaller than he wanted). Since there’s only room for a few things on this mantle, I have to select the items carefully each season.
I purchased a pair of topiaries in terra cotta looking pots. I was going for classic, green, and plain in order to get the most decorating mileage out of them. I already had the small Easter eggs, so I nestled 5 of them into each topiary. The greenery was tight enough to keep them in there without permanently gluing them. When Easter is over, I can just remove the eggs and keep the pots there until I update the mantle for summer. I love that!
I already had this light turquoise frame on the mantle from my Christmas decor (see this mantle at Christmas time HERE), and I love how it looks in this spot. So, I created a new spring print to replace the Christmas one. I added a ceramic turquoise egg beside it as a little Easter accent.

The other side of the mantle has 2 ceramic bunnies and a tiny Easter basket with some moss and one single egg. I want to show you what these bunnies used to look like.
I got these bunnies from a friend who was moving. I didn’t like the color or pattern, but I thought I could paint them. If you’ll look closely, you can see that there’s a lot of detail in the shape of the bunnies. I simply painted them with chalk paint (I applied 3-4 thin coats of paint letting it completely dry between coats), and now they have a whole new life! Keep an eye out for treasures like these at thrift stores and garage sales!
When I saw these wooden beads at Kirklands, I knew they would be perfect below my mantle. Without much decorating space above the mantle I just had to put something underneath. The fringed ends add a perfect pop of color for spring. I can also use these later to decorate in other areas, which makes them a great decor piece to add to my collection!
Keeping Room
If you’ve seen previous pics of my keeping room, you may notice a rather large new addition. I recently added the architectural piece above the fireplace, and I absolutely love it! Even though this room isn’t very big, it has high ceilings. By adding something tall above the fireplace your eye is now drawn up to notice all that space. It makes the whole room feel larger!
If you’re interested in this piece, it’s called the Distressed Ivory Grand Gate Plaque from Kirkland’s. I don’t think it’s available anymore, but they have many similar architectural pieces to fit just about any space.
I also asked my husband to place a screw in the top center so I can hang different things from it all year. This spring I’m displaying a simple boxwood wreath up there. I’m looking forward to changing this up and hanging all kinds of things throughout the year!
I repeated the boxwood below the gate and in the center of the mantle. You can find something similar HERE. To the right is a simple ceramic bunny (it’s actually a piggy bank from my daughter’s room when she was a baby), and to the left is a ceramic canister with a bunny on top.
I love the colors in this wood art piece, and it screamed spring to me. It coordinates nicely with all the colors in my keeping room, so it found a home on the mantle.
A set of 3 distressed candlesticks from Decor Steals finishes out the spring mantle. They have been displayed in many different ways around our home and are one of my favorite decorating pieces.
Freshly clipped branches from a red maple tree in our backyard in a pretty sea blue vase add some height to the fireplace hearth.
And a pair of turquoise ceramic birds have taken up residency in this distressed lantern. To vary the height I placed a tiny grapevine nest on a wooden candlestick and added lots of moss as well. Don’t they look cozy?
