These holiday red velvet Christmas tree brownie treats comes from our new baking contributors Carrie, from Worth Pinning. Aren’t they so gorgeous?!

With so many special treats baked around the holidays, brownies can get left in the dark. As one of the most requested treats in my household, I thought I’d find a way to bring this otherwise dark and rather drab looking dessert into the holiday festivities this year. And the best part, these pretty red velvet trees don’t require any fancy decorating skills.

RED VELVET CHRISTMAS TREE BROWNIE RECIPE

Directions:

Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Pour in a medium mixing bowl. Whisk 3 eggs in another medium mixing bowl.

Add the sugar, vanilla extract & cocoa powder to the melted butter and combine.

Melt the 1/2 cup of chocolate chips in a saucepan and add to the sugar mixture. Add the whisked eggs to the sugar mixture. Add red food coloring. If you want a brighter red, use more red food coloring. Divide brownie batter between two 9×9″ pans sprayed with cooking spray.

Bake at 350F for approximately 35 minutes. You want the brownies to bake long enough so the entire brownie lifts from the pan in one piece. The edges may be a little more done than the middle. You can trim the edges. You can’t un-goo the centers if they aren’t baked enough. Let the brownies cool and remove from pans. For larger brownies, slice the 9×9 square in half and then cut 3 triangles from each row = 6 large trees. For smaller brownies, cut in 3 rows and slice into 7 triangles = 21 smaller trees. Eat the trimmed excess. I usually find kitchen helpers by then to help with that step.

There are so many decorating possibilities with these trees. I prepped a bag of white frosting to add sugar pearls. I would typically put a scoop of frosting in a Ziplock bag and snip the corner, but I wanted to try a star decorating tip as well. Pipe dots and place sugar pearls or other seasonal sprinkles using a pair of tweezers. Don’t have that kind of patience? Pipe a line and dunk the brownie on a plate of sprinkles. Same look, but easier for kids to help.

My tip for using decorating bags is to first place the frosting on a piece of plastic wrap, roll it and secure with tape and then insert inside the decorating bag. Pull the end of the plastic wrap through the end and then add the tip and secure with the coupler. When you are finished, just pull the plastic from the bag and you can reuse the bag again. The only thing you have to clean is the tip.

The tree trunks were created using a variety of mini candy bars such as mini Kit Kats, Nestle Crunch Bars, Milky Ways, etc. Hold on to some of your Halloween candy this year!

These chewy Red Velvet Brownies can be baked and decorated within an hour. Watch out- they’ll be gone before you know it. Luckily, this recipe is easy enough to make again and again.

FAQs

Do you need to grease parchment paper for brownies? ›

After greasing the pan, many bakers like to line it with pieces of parchment paper or aluminum foil that have been cut larger than the size of the pan so that the edges hang over the sides like a sling. Thoroughly grease the lining.

How do you keep brownies from burning around the edges? ›

Cover with aluminum foil: To prevent the edges from burning while the middle cooks, you can cover the brownies with aluminum foil. This will help distribute the heat more evenly and prevent excessive browning on the edges [1].

Why do my brownies always stick to the pan? ›

In my experience, a(n) (un)healthy layer of shortening or butter in the baking pan will do a decent job of keeping brownies from sticking to the pan. I usually put some on a scrunched up paper towel and coat the empty baking pan. Also, if the brownies are underdone, they will be inclined to stick.

Is red velvet made with chocolate or vanilla? ›

However, so-called velvet cakes have been popular since the 19th century or Victorian era. In 1911, a combination of devil's food cake and mahogany cake was published as a velvet cocoa cake recipe. Red velvet cake is sometimes mistaken for chocolate, but it's a vanilla cake with a striking ruby color.

Is red velvet just cocoa? ›

On top of having all the typical cake ingredients (flour, sugar, butter, and eggs), red velvet cake is also comprised of cocoa powder, buttermilk, and vinegar. When combined, these ingredients create the color as the cocoa powder reacts to the acids.

Is it better to bake brownies with butter or parchment paper? ›

Oh, because it makes removing your brownies from the pan a cinch, and makes clean-up quicker too. "Line all your pans with parchment paper!" notes Molly Hanson, executive pastry chef, Grill 23 & Bar in Boston, Massachusetts. The trick not only works for brownies and bars, but cakes and cookies, too.

Is it better to grease brownie pan with butter or oil? ›

Vegetable oil or shortening is your best bet at ensuring your baked goods don't stick to the pan; however, they do little to flavor your recipe. If you use butter, the key is to use it sparingly, preferably along with a nonstick pan.

Can I use aluminum foil instead of parchment paper for brownies? ›

Yes this is fine to do. If you are using foil though, you want to stay anywhere below 400° just because of the durability of the foil and it's heat resistance. I bake brownies all the time for lots of people and I use foil to line all my pans, it makes it a neater cut for them.

Should you let brownie batter rest? ›

Because most brownie recipes call for eggs, the batter shouldn't sit out for longer than two hours before baking. On the other hand, the sauce and dry ingredients can be made a few days in advance and refrigerated for freshness.

Why do my brownies never cook in the middle? ›

If the middle is raw but the edges are burning, your oven is too hot. For a standard recipe, cooked in an 8 inch square tin, we'd look to cook the brownies low-and-slow - around 30 minutes at 160C.

Do brownies bake better in glass or metal pans? ›

The Bottom Line

If you make brownies or bake often, consider using or purchasing a metal pan to use in place of your Pyrex dish. Metal pans, specifically aluminum, absorb and transfer heat more consistently than glass, making them perfect for delicious, evenly-cooked, moist brownies every time.

What happens if you don't grease the pan for brownies? ›

If you don't know how to grease a pan it's super important to learn, otherwise your cakes will stick and not release. And it's not just for cakes! Brownies, bars and cookies also need some sort of nonstick surface to bake on otherwise you'll have a mess to clean up.

How long should brownies cool before removing from pan? ›

If the recipe you're using gives instructions for a specific cooling method, follow it and wait for your brownies to cool completely. If there aren't specific instructions, leave the brownies in the pan, put the pan on a rack and let them cool completely (which means a 2 to 3 hour wait).

What is red velvet flavor? ›

What flavor is red velvet? While there are cocoa undertones, red velvet is not chocolate cake because it balances both chocolate and vanilla flavors. It contains cocoa but not the same quantity as traditional chocolate cake, resulting in a more subtle cocoa flavor and tanginess due to the buttermilk and vinegar.

Is red velvet basically chocolate cake? ›

No, Red Velvet Cake is not just Chocolate Cake. While both Red Velvet Cake and Chocolate Cake use cocoa, that's where the similarities basically end. Chocolate Cake is made with Dutch processed cocoa, melted chocolate, or both.

What is the difference between red velvet cake and brownies? ›

It typically has a tender and moist texture, and is usually iced with a cream cheese frosting. The bright red color is achieved by using a small amount of cocoa powder and red food coloring. In comparison, brownies are a dense and fudgy dessert with a strong chocolate flavor, often containing nuts or chocolate chips.

What is red velvet cake based off of? ›

While red velvet cake is technically a cocoa cake, there is a key difference between standard chocolate cake and red velvet cake. Chocolate cake recipes traditionally use Dutch-processed cocoa, while red velvet cake uses unprocessed cocoa, a more acidic ingredient that produces a deeper, more intense chocolate flavor.
