Homemade Strawberry Jam Recipe| Cook Click N Devour!!! (1)

Strawberries are one of our most favorite fruit. My daughter and I simply love the slightly tart taste of this fruit and we cannot get enough of it during season. Smoothies, ice creams, milkshake, cheesecakes, this fruit is yum in all forms 🙂

Apparently I end up with boxes of berries more than we can consume in short time. That’s when I make this super yummy strawberry jam or this sauce or this strawberry syrup. All these recipes let you enjoy your favorite fruit a little longer.

I am big fan of DIY condiments. Not only I completely detest the preservatives or fillers in store bought jams, they are also overly sweet. I mean you will only taste sugar and not the fruit.

While making jams at home you can totally control the amount of sugar. For instance in this homemade strawberry am recipe, I have used 1.5 cups sugar for 300 grams berries. This jam has the right amount of sweetness and not overly sweet at all.

Having said that, you also need to know that sugar along with lemon juice helps in setting any homemade jam. So if your fruits are very tart or less in natural sugar you might want to add few more tablespoons of sugar.

Apart from taste, making jam at home is real fun and can be a good activity of stirring for kids. What can be a more special breakfast or snack for them other than buttered toast with a hearty spread of homemade jam?

I hope you will try this easy recipe, this will get you started on homemade jams if you haven’t tried yet.

Strawberries– Yeah our star of this recipe. I have used tiny oddly shaped organic berries that were sweet with slight tartness. You can use organic or regular berries. You can also use frozen strawberries but you will have to cook them a bit longer.

SugarSugar along with lemon juice helps in setting the homemade jam. You can use any type of sugar here. For this recipe I have used organic non refined sugar. I do not prefer jaggery for this recipe. I have tried strawberry jam with jaggery once and the flavor was not good.

If the drop sets and is not runny after cooling a bit, your jam is done. Else return to heat and cook for few minutes.

Is strawberry jam better with or without pectin? ›

No extra pectin– You may wonder if strawberry jam is better with or without pectin. Strawberries are naturally low in pectin, so some people prefer to add additional pectin to jams and jellies. Why add lemon juice when making strawberry jam? ›

Adding acid in the form of fresh lemon or lime juice is important for two reasons: First, it makes for a more well-balanced jam, returning some of the acidity lost with the addition of sugar. Second, pectin needs acid to properly activate, or firm up.

Can I use lemon juice instead of pectin in jam? ›

Although we are not adding powdered pectin, we will add citric acid or lemon juice to the jam. This gives an additional pop of pectin but also some acidity that balances the sweetness of the jam. Citric acid provides very consistent results, which is why I like to use it.

What thickens jam without pectin? ›

If you aren't using pectin as a thickener, the sugar as well as the cornstarch slurry will work to thicken quite well. Feel free to add more for an even thicker jam.

Should you stir jam while it's boiling? ›

5. Do Not Stir Once Mixture Is Boiling. Once your jam/marmalade it has reached a rapid rolling boil do not stir it. Stirring it will alter the temperature of the jam/marmalade meaning it will take longer to reach the setting point.

Can I use bottled lemon juice instead of fresh for jam? ›

You can use bottled lemon juice or fresh. However, I personally look to use other complementary juices to certain fruit jams. Rather than rely on lemon juice I would for example use redcurrant juice from fresh redcurrants in a strawberry jam instead, or an acidic type of apple and apple juice in a blackberry jam etc.

What is the ratio of sugar to fruit for jam? ›

Over-ripe or damaged fruit is not ideal - the jam will not set well and is likely to deteriorate rapidly. The amount of sugar you need to make jam depends on the amount of pectin in your chosen fruit, but generally the fruit-to-sugar ratio for traditional jams is 1:1 (ie. 450g/1lb sugar to 450g/1lb fruit).

Can you reboil jam if it doesn't set? ›

If the fruit you are using has low pectin levels, then you can add some more pectin and reboil the jam. Pectin is available in both powdered and liquid forms. Read the instructions on the packet to give quantities, add all the jam to a saucepan and stir in the pectin. Clean and re-prepare the jam jars.

Can I use cornstarch instead of pectin to make jam? ›

Some of my favourite jam flavours are mixed berries, peach and cherry. This jam recipe is made without pectin. Cornflour (or cornstarch) combined with lemon juice is a great alternative to pectin. It thickens up jam really well, combined with the sugar and heat.

Will adding more sugar thicken jam? ›

Sadly, sugar plays a huge role in set. If you cut the amount in the recipe and you don't compensate with a pectin designed for low sugar preserving, your jam may well be runny. Did you check for set while the jam was cooking? Any time a recipe gives you a cooking time, it's simply an approximation.

What is the secret in making jam? ›

Pectin, naturally found in fruit is vital to make your jam set. With low-pectin fruits like strawberries, help them along by either mixing with pectin-rich fruit like gooseberries or by using jam sugar (with added pectin and citric acid).

Why is my homemade strawberry jam runny? ›

If, after waiting, you find the jam is still too loose for your liking, empty the jars back into a wide pot and cook again. Wash and sterilize the jars and try again. While you can simply reduce the jam to your liking, you can also add commercial pectin or chia seeds to the reducing jam to guarantee thickening.

What are the ingredients in Smucker's pure strawberry jam? ›

Ingredients. Sugars (sugar, Glucose, Glucose-fructose), Strawberries, Citric Acid, Pectin, Mono And Diglycerides. We do our best to be accurate with respect to the advertised ingredients, nutritional information, product images and descriptions listed on our app/website.

What happens if you don't use pectin in jam? ›

You don't have to, but proceed carefully. "If you are really anti-pectin, you can omit it, but you'll need to cook the jam longer. Doing so will remove most of the water content in order to get it to set up properly and in turn, will result in a smaller yield," adds Wynne.

Does pectin change the flavor of jam? ›

Preserve fresh flavor.

Strawberry jam with added pectin can be cooked in as little as ten minutes, preserving that fresh berry flavor and quality. Strawberry jam without added pectin needs to be cooked up to four times longer to reach the gel stage, resulting in a much sweeter, less fresh-tasting jam.

Can you put too much pectin in jam? ›

You will need approximately half the amount of pectin that is indicated by your recipe. Please be careful when adding pectin as too much will leave you with a set that is too solid and it is not possible to rectify this so always add less than you think is necessary and test the set and then add more if required.

Is jelly better with or without pectin? ›

The use of commercial pectin simplifies the process, but jelly made without added pectin contains less sugar and tastes fruitier. Follow the manufacturer's directions for using commercial pectin and do not interchange liquid and powdered pectins. Acid: The proper level of acid is critical to gel formation.
