In the year 11945 during the 14th Machine War (sometime after the 4th ending of the original NieR), Earth has suddenly been invaded by extraterrestrial life forms, armed with weapons known as “bio-machines.” Facing imminent destruction, mankind had no choice but to flee the Earth and take refuge on the moon. In an attempt to reclaim their planet, humanity formed a resistance army of android soldiers, and created YoRHA, infantry android units that were sent out to battle against the machina to reclaim Earth — an arduous battle between androids and bio-machines unfolds on an uninhabited, barren planet. The universe of NieR takes place within an alternate timeline of the Drakengard series and it carries over theDrakengard'sculture such as a dark tone with branching storylines and multiple endings. NieR: Automata is set in the year 11945 AD that takes place thousands of years after the end of the original game's events. NieR Automata follows the adventurous battle between the human-made androids, YoRHa, and an army of machines that have invaded Earth — hoping to push back the machine forces to reclaim humanity's planet.
NieR Automata initially gives players the role of the popular YoRHa android, YoRHa No. 2 Type B, better known as 2B, and is accompanied by a male "scanner" android, YoRHa No.9 Type S, or 9S. The two androids show different personalities as 2B is calm, composed, and focused on her task, while 9S demonstrates more emotion and a better understanding of machines compared to other YoRHa units. With two different personalities, 2B and 9S learn to work as a team by using their strengths and supporting each other's weaknesses.
As the player progresses the story and starts multiple playthroughs in NieR Automata,they are thrown challenges against the game's main protagonist, Adam and Eve, who are twin controllers of the Machine Network, the Red Girls, a construct within the Machine Network, and also steps into the shoes of a third playable character, A2, an obsolete attack android with a taciturn personality who often chooses to act alone.
