What’s your favorite vegan protein powder? Have you truly, madly, deeply been able to find a legit vegan protein powder that tastes good? Or, just edible? Be real.

I’m only asking because: it’s tough out there. Protein powders in general aren’t that tasty to begin with (Understatement of the Century), and when they go vegan, things get even fishier. Not sure why I had to bring fish into this.

Moving on, when I started working on my Chocolate Vegan Protein Shake recipe, I ordered all the vegan protein powders out there. (Hint/spoiler alert: I may have an in-depth review coming soon.) Update: here’s the post! –> Best Vegan Protein Powder RANKED. Let’s just say, things got rough as heck.

Like, have you ever seen that episode of Goosebumps where that one monster turns out to be in the green goo that’s bubbling in the stockpot? Yep, that pretty much covers the consistency/probably-the-taste-judging-by-the-goo/etc of it. And, I mean, I’ve been drinking vegan protein powder for years!

I just thought things would get better. With technology and the like. But, alas, that’s not how they all go. But, rest assured, I’ve got the tastiest vegan protein powder for you (and no, this isn’t sponsored one bit!).

  • Chocolate Vegan Protein Powder: this brand is my go-to chocolate vegan protein powder. My favorite thing to do is use 1 scoop of the chocolate flavor and 1 scoop of the vanilla vegan protein powder. Such a good combo! When I need to switch thing up (because protein powder can get tedious, folks!), I go to my second favorite vegan protein powder.
  • My Favorite Personal Blender: Ever since I invested in this personal blender four months ago, it’s been the only blender I use to make my daily vegan protein shake. Get this–you can set it and forget it. As in: load up the blender with all of your shake ingredients, press the button and walk away. The blender is timed to perfectly blend, then stop, then blend until you get the smoothest smoothie. How cool is that?
  • Extra Blender Cups: Let’s be real here, youalways need extra blender cups. Like, we don’t all have time to do the dishes 3x a day, so these come in handy when I just need to make a quick vegan protein shake and the other blender cups are still dirty!
  • Blender Bottle: For a quick vegan protein shake, shake together 1 cup of non-dairy milk, 1-2 scoops of your favorite vegan protein powder and, optionally, 1/4 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract. So good! I keep blender bottles on hand so I can easily get my vegan protein shake in for the day. No fuss, no muss.
  • MCT Oil: One of my essential boosters in my daily vegan protein shake. It’s called MCT oil as shorthand for medium chain triglycerides. MCTs are known to improve brain function, energy levels and keep you full for longer.

It’s totally time for all the jump squats and burpees, right? Okay, scratch the burpees and just gimme all the vegan protein shakes!! 😉 I can’t wait to hear what you think of my chocolate vegan protein shake recipe. Just know, I’m grateful that you’re here, sharing in these kitchen moments with me and your loved ones. ‘Til the next one…

Description

Chocolate Vegan Protein Shake Recipe (V, GF): all you need are 5 minutes & 3 ingredients to make the EASIEST & best vegan protein shake recipe—delicious, healthy & protein-rich! 22g of protein per serving. Sugar Free, Gluten Free, Low Carb.

Ingredients

Scale

Chocolate Vegan Protein Shake

  • ¾ cup unsweetened non-dairy milk (more below)
  • ¼ cup + 2 tablespoons chocolate vegan protein powder (or two scoops of the vegan protein powder that I use)*
  • 1 tablespoon MCT oil (optional)
  • 1 cup ice cubes
  • ½ cup unsweetened non-dairy milk

Optional Boosters

  • For ENERGY: ¼ teaspoon gelatinized maca powder
  • For Fruit: swap 1/2 cup ice cubes with 1/2 to 3/4 cup frozen fruit
  • For Veggies: ¼ cup to ½ cup frozen spinach
  • For Protein Boost: 2 tablespoons peanut powder
  • For Healthy Fats: 2 tablespoons unsalted, natural creamy almond butter or other nut butter, or MCT oil
  • For Fun: 1 tablespoon paleo chocolate chunks

Instructions

  1. This is the blender I use to make my smoothies. It’s easy to use, holds the perfect amount, and can be left to keep blending while I walk away (it runs by itself). Not sponsored, I just love this!
  2. Add all ingredients in the order listed: 3/4 cup non-dairy milk, vegan protein powder, MCT oil, ice cubes and ½ cup milk. This is the order that I’ve found to be smoothest, without any protein powder getting stuck in a clump anywhere.
  3. Depending on your daily nutritional requirements/needs, feel free to add maca powder, peanut powder, nut butter or MCT oil.
  4. Close blender. Blend until smooth and no chunks remain. Enjoy immediately!
  5. If you don’t know what vegan protein powder to use… here’s my review + guide to vegan protein powders: Best Vegan Protein Powder RANKED.

FAQs

How do you make a vegan protein shake taste better? ›

Try adding a spoonful of natural nut butter, such as almond butter or peanut butter, for added flavor and creaminess. Add a teaspoon of vanilla extract or a sprinkle of cinnamon or nutmeg for extra flavor. You can also use a vegan protein powder that is made with natural sweeteners, such as stevia or monk fruit.

How do you thicken a vegan protein shake? ›

Incorporate Oats

Quick oats can absorb moisture in about 15 minutes. So, if you need a quick way to make your protein shake thicker, stirring in a modest scoop of oats can do just the trick.

What is the ratio of milk to protein powder in a shake? ›

In generally, 6-12 oz of milk for each scoop of protein powder is recommended. However, if you are looking for a more flavorful shake, try including as little as 4 ounces of milk for each scoop of protein powder. As always, make sure to mix well using a blender bottle or blender for best results.

How do you make chocolate plant protein taste better? ›

Add salt and citric acid to your protein shake

These two really smooth out the rough edges, so to speak, but you can add any other seasonings you like. If you usually buy vanilla-flavored protein, try a splash of actual vanilla extract; if you prefer chocolate, add some extra cocoa powder.

What makes chocolate protein shakes taste better? ›

If you have a chocolate protein powder and it is too strong in flavor, a good way for how to make chocolate protein shake taste better would be to balance the more bitter cocoa flavor with a sweeter flavor such as a banana.

Why is my vegan protein not mixing well? ›

Some common reasons your protein powder may clump include improper storage (protein powders should be stored in a cool, dry place), improper blending (avoid using a spoon to stir), improper temperature of the liquid (protein powders mix poorly in very cold water), or the quality of the protein powder itself.

What makes a protein shake creamy? ›

Casein is a milk protein that is naturally creamier than other protein powders when mixed in water. If you mix it with cream or milk it will be even thicker. Finally, my favorite way to thicken up a shake is to use about a tablespoon of Sugar-Free/Fat-Free Instant Pudding mix.

Why won't my vegan protein powder dissolve? ›

Not enough liquid.

If the protein drink becomes too thick the liquid will be completely saturated and the powder has no where to dissolve. In this instance, you may need to either add more water or reduce the amount of protein you're mixing.

What is the perfect protein shake ratio? ›

Take one 30g scoop in 300-400ml of water or skimmed milk (it has a higher calcium level) or a 50/50 mix of the two. Shake the bottle really well (or use a blender) for a few minutes as it should be of a creamy consistency.

What is the best liquid to mix protein powder with? ›

To make it more delicious, we recommend mixing it with your milk of choice. If you're running low on electrolytes, then coconut water is a great liquid to make it with. And if you want to keep your protein shake as low in calories as possible, then water is always a solid choice.

What happens if I put too much milk in my protein shake? ›

Adding milk to your protein shake can slow down digestion compared to water, as dairy milk may contain fats, as well as casein, which digests slower1 than whey protein. If you're using a whey isolate specifically for fast digestion as a pre-workout or post-workout option, know that adding milk may slow digestion.

What does adding ice to a protein shake do? ›

Ice: This one might sound counterproductive, but blending some ice into a protein shake can certainly thicken it up, and give us more of a frothy milkshake texture. This option keeps your shake as close to the original 'recipe' as possible and adds no extra calories.

What goes well with chocolate protein powder? ›

Some of the best fruits you can blend with chocolate protein powder are bananas and berries such as strawberries, blackberries, cherries, and blueberries. There are also other fruits that complement the cocoa taste of chocolate-flavored protein.

How do you make vegan protein taste less chalky? ›

Add more liquid: Sometimes adding more liquid to your shake can help dilute the chalkiness and make it smoother. Start with adding a small amount of liquid at a time and blend until you reach your desired consistency.

How do you make bad tasting protein powder taste good? ›

Thick foods like oatmeal, pudding, yogurt, or applesauce can mask the taste of protein powder well. They moisten and dissolve the powder on their own, so you don't have to pull out your blender.

How to make a protein shake that doesn t taste like protein powder? ›

The best way to do it is to add other ingredients, like fruits, nuts, or even veggies. Not only will it fix the flavor of your protein shake, it will also add important nutrients, vitamins and minerals to your shake. Some popular fruits to add to your shake include: Berries.
